Chevalier T. Thomas Elizabeth College for Women (CTTE) joyfully celebrated the Tamil harvest festival, Thai Pongal, on 12 January 2026. Organised by the Student Council, the celebration highlighted the richness of Tamil cultural heritage and fostered a sense of pride and togetherness among students.
The festivities began with the traditional Pongal preparation ceremony on campus. Decorated earthen pots and colourful kolams symbolised prosperity and gratitude to nature. Students from eleven undergraduate and two postgraduate departments actively took part in preparing Pongal in the traditional manner, joined by members of the National Service Scheme (NSS) and the Student Council. The air resonated with the auspicious chant of “Pongalo Pongal!”
The programme featured vibrant cultural performances by students. The Entry Walk, showcasing traditional Tamil attire, was a standout moment. Folk dances such as Karagattam, along with traditional songs, reflected the spirit of rural Tamil Nadu and were warmly appreciated by the audience.
Several performances carried meaningful messages, including a mime presentation, a speech on the significance of Pongal, and an awareness skit, blending cultural values with social consciousness.
Adding to the festive spirit, a variety of traditional games and competitions—such as Lemon and Spoon, Anthakshari, and Hopscotch—saw enthusiastic participation from both students and faculty, strengthening bonds and creating joyful moments.
The celebration concluded on a sweet note with the distribution of Pongal, leaving everyone with happy memories and a renewed appreciation of Tamil heritage.
A celebration of culture, community, and tradition at CTTE!
