Basketball Excellence Shines at HITS: Home Team Clinches Championship in Dr. K.C.G. Verghese Memorial Tournament

Chennai: Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS) successfully concluded the 34th Dr. KCG Verghese Memorial Inter-Institutional Basketball Tournament, showcasing exceptional talent from 18 university teams across Chennai. The prestigious three-day event with a prize pool of Rs. 1.5 Lakhs was held at the Michael Jordan Basketball Court from and honored the legacy of HITS Founder Chairman Dr. KCG Verghese while promoting sportsmanship and community engagement.

The men’s tournament saw a triumphant performance from the host institution, with HITS claiming the championship title. Jeppiaar University secured the runners-up position, while PES University (Karnataka) took home the 3rd place and Pondicherry University wonfourth place. In the women’s category, Vels University emerged victorious, followed by University of Madras, with HITS securing third place and SSN Chennai in fourth position. The first-placewinners in both men’s and women’categories were awarded ₹30,000 prize money, while the second-place winners took home ₹20,000 and the 3rd and 4th place winners got ₹15,000 and ₹10,000 respectively. 

“This tournament embodies our commitment to fostering not just academic excellence but also sporting achievement and personal growth,” said Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Chancellor of HITS, while congratulating the participants. Pro-Chancellor Dr. Ashok Verghesecommended the remarkable efforts of athletes, coaches, and organizers in ensuring high-caliber competition.

Ms. Prachi Tehlan, renowned Indian actress and former international basketball and netball captain, delivered an inspiring address as chief guest. “As someone who transitioned from sports to entertainment, I can attest that the discipline and teamwork I learned on the basketball court have been invaluable in every aspect of my life. HITS is providing these students with more than just athletic skills—they’re building future leaders,” remarked Ms. Prachi Tehlan during her address at the valedictory ceremony.

The event was further distinguished by the presence of notable dignitaries including Mr. Jayasankar Menon (Former Captain, Indian Basketball Team), and Mr. Balakrishnan (Secretary, Indian Basketball Players Association).
