Chennai, June 10, 2026: SRM Global Hospitals successfully treated a 56-year-old patient diagnosed with Mucinous Neoplasm of the Appendix, a rare and complex tumour by performing Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) to remove all visible tumour deposits, followed by Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), an advanced procedure that delivers heated chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity to eliminate residual microscopic disease.
The patient from Chengalpattu sought medical guidance after suffering from severe lower abdominal pain despite taking medications. Following a CECT abdomen, colonoscopy, and biopsy, medical experts diagnosed the patient with perforated mucinous appendicular neoplasm, a mucus-producing tumour that has burst, allowing mucus and potentially tumour cells to leak into the abdominal cavity.
The doctors’ team decided to perform CRS, aiming to remove all visible tumour tissues and mucus surgically. Since excessive mucus and tumour cells had spread across the abdominal cavity, the condition could, in turn, cause gradual enlargement of the abdomen over time and organ dysfunction.
Doctors then used HIPEC, one of the advanced treatment modalities for selected peritoneal surface malignancies, to circulate heated chemotherapy into the peritoneal cavity to kill any remaining microscopic cancer cells. This has increased the survival rate of the patient from 32-40% to 75-83%.
Following the surgery, the patient was advised to take a high-protein diet and undergo adjuvant chemotherapy at regular intervals.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Karikal Chakaravarthi, Senior Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist, Dr. Karthikeyan, Medical Oncologist, and Dr. Varun, Consultant Anaesthetist, under the guidance of Prof. O. L Naganath Babu, Senior Consultant Surgical Gastroenterologist.
In his comments, Dr. Karikal Chakaravarthi said, “Mucinous appendicular neoplasms are rare tumours that can spread mucus and tumour cells throughout the abdominal cavity, leading to serious complications if left untreated. Managing these cases requires a highly specialised approach. In this patient, we performed extensive surgery to remove all visible disease, followed by heated chemotherapy delivered directly into the abdomen to target any remaining microscopic tumour cells. This combined approach offers the best chance of long-term disease control and improved outcomes.”
Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan, President – SRM Global Hospitals, said, “Advanced procedures such as CRS-HIPEC require a high level of multidisciplinary expertise, infrastructure, and coordinated clinical care. The successful treatment of this patient reflects our commitment to delivering world-class, evidence-based cancer care through expert collaboration, advanced technology, and a patient-centered approach. We commend our multidisciplinary team for their dedication and excellence in achieving this positive outcome.”
