Bureau of Indian Standards, Chennai conducts Jewellers Awareness Programme on Hallmarking at Ariyalur

Chennai / Ariyalur, June 2026: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, organised a Jewellers Awareness Programme on Hallmarking at Hotel Laya Inn, Ariyalur, on June 19, 2026, for the benefit of jewellers from Ariyalur and Perambalur districts.

The programme was organised to create awareness among jewellers regarding BIS Hallmarking requirements, regulatory provisions, compliance obligations and digital services offered by BIS for facilitating effective implementation of hallmarking. The programme witnessed participation from jewellers and representatives of jewellery associations from Ariyalur and Perambalur.

Shri S. D. Dayanand, Scientist–F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office, delivered the welcome address and outlined the objectives of the programme. He highlighted the role of BIS in ensuring quality, safety and consumer confidence through standardisation, certification and hallmarking initiatives.

Highlighting the importance of hallmarking, Shri S. D. Dayanand stated that the programme was specially organised for jewellers from Ariyalur and Perambalur, which are presently non-mandatory districts for hallmarking. He said, “BIS Hallmarking has become an important tool for building consumer trust in the jewellery sector. When customers purchase hallmarked jewellery, they receive an assurance regarding the purity of the precious metal, enabling informed purchasing decisions. Hallmarking not only protects consumers but also benefits genuine jewellers by enhancing their credibility, strengthening customer confidence and promoting fair trade practices. Consumers increasingly prefer hallmarked jewellery, making compliance an important business advantage for jewellers.”

He further urged the jewellers to obtain BIS Lifetime Registration, which is granted without cost. He stated that registration with BIS enables jewellers to sell hallmarked jewellery and participate in the hallmarking ecosystem in a compliant manner. He also apprised the participants that BIS regularly undertakes surveillance and enforcement activities across the country to identify violations of hallmarking provisions. Action is taken under the BIS Act and Hallmarking Regulations against entities found selling non-hallmarked jewellery in notified areas or misusing hallmarking marks. He urged jewellers to strictly comply with hallmarking requirements and uphold the declared purity standards in the interest of consumers and the jewellery trade.

A technical presentation was delivered by Shri Sai Chandra, Scientist–C / Deputy Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office. During the session, he explained the provisions of the Hallmarking Scheme, registration procedures for jewellers, responsibilities of registered jewellers, HUID-based hallmarking, compliance requirements and the digital services available through the e-BIS portal. He also addressed practical issues relating to implementation and documentation requirements.

Representatives of various Jewellery Associations from Ariyalurand Perambalur districts were felicitated during the programme in recognition of their support in promoting awareness on hallmarking among jewellers.

An interactive Open House discussion followed, wherein participants sought clarifications on hallmarking norms, HUID generation, registration procedures, compliance requirements and BIS digital services. The queries raised by jewellers were addressed by BIS officials, who assured continued guidance and support for effective implementation of hallmarking provisions.

The programme reinforced BIS’s commitment to strengthening the hallmarking ecosystem in Ariyalur and Perambalur by equipping jewellers with the necessary knowledge and regulatory clarity to ensure quality, compliance and consumer trust. Consumers and industry stakeholders were advised to verify the authenticity of Hallmark registrations, ISI Mark licences and Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) registrations through the BIS Care App, BIS portal or by scanning QR codes, wherever applicable.
