BIS Chennai conducts Capsule Training Course on Domestic Pressure Cooker – IS 2347

Chennai, May 26, 2026: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, continues to strengthen quality consciousness, product safety and technical competence among industries through focused capacity-building initiatives and technical training programmes.

As part of its Capsule Course initiative, the BIS Chennai Branch Office organised a two-day Capsule Training Course on “Domestic Pressure Cooker as per IS 2347” on 25 & 26 May 2026 at the Southern Regional Office, Taramani, Chennai, for Quality Control Personnel from Domestic Pressure Cooker Manufacturing Industries.

The programme commenced with the Welcome Address and briefing on Programme Objectives by Shri S. D. Dayanand, Scientist–F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office. In his address, he highlighted the importance of Indian Standards in ensuring consumer safety, product reliability and quality consistency. He emphasised that domestic pressure cookers are widely used household appliances and strict adherence to IS 2347 is essential to safeguard consumers and maintain confidence in certified products. He further stated that BIS continues to undertake various measures including surveillance activities, market monitoring, testing and capacity-building programmes to ensure compliance with Indian Standards and strengthen the quality ecosystem in the country.

The Inaugural Address was delivered by Shri Sandeep Kumar Kanogia, Deputy Director General (South), Bureau of Indian Standards. During his inaugural address, he stated that Domestic Pressure cookersare among the most widely used household products and have a direct bearing on consumer safety. He informed that the product was brought under mandatory certification in 2020, considering the safety of the consumer. Capsule Courses play an important role in enhancing industry understanding of standards and conformity assessment procedures, thereby contributing towards the larger objective of ensuring quality and safety of products available to consumers. He urged the participants to thoroughly test products and minimize failures. He advised the participants to be attentive, raise queries if any, and learn as much as possible so that testing of the product in their factories can be carried out as per the specified test methods.

The technical sessions were conducted by Shri Hitesh Yadav, Scientist–C / Deputy Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office. The sessions included detailed discussions on Indian Standard IS 2347 for Domestic Pressure Cookers, provisions of the Product Manual, Scheme of Inspection and Testing (SIT), specific guidelines and record-keeping requirements under the BIS Product Certification Scheme.

Further sessions elaborated on procedures related to Grant of Licence, Inclusion, Renewal, Operation of Licence, Deferment, Expiry and Dormancy of licences, along with important features of the e-BIS portal. Special sessions were also conducted on guidelines relating to critical sample failure and product recall procedures under IS 2347. Interactive discussions and clarification sessions enabled participants to directly engage with the faculty and gain practical understanding of compliance and certification requirements.

As part of the programme, participants were taken to the BIS Southern Regional Laboratory (SRL), Taramani, Chennai, where practical demonstrations on testing of important and critical parameters under IS 2347 were conducted with the support of the SRL team. The practical exposure provided participants with better understanding of laboratory testing methodologies and the importance of maintaining conformity with Indian Standards.

The course witnessed active participation from Quality Engineers, Quality Managers, Supervisors and other quality control personnel representing the domestic pressure cooker manufacturing industry.

The programme concluded with feedback and interactive closing sessions, where participants appreciated the practical orientation and detailed technical guidance provided during the training. Certificates were presented to all participants upon successful completion of the course.

BIS regularly conducts Capsule Courses and technical training programmes to support industries in improving product quality, safety and ensure compliance with National Standards.
