WOMENS DAY Article Women Are The Backbone of Society Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

In Indian culture, the principle of women’s empowerment has been upheld for thousands of years. If we look at our ancient scriptures, we find that significant responsibilities have always been entrusted to women. The Devi Purana and Devi Bhagavatam illustrate this beautifully—Durga is in charge of defense, Lakshmi oversees finance, and Saraswati governs education.

We refer to our nation as Bharat Mata—people in no other country refer to their nation as a mother.

Women bring us into this world and teach us how to live. A mother is our first Guru, imparting the earliest lessons of life. A woman plays multiple roles in society—she is a daughter, a sister, a mother and a child.

A Word for Mothers

When mothers scold their children, they often feel guilty afterward. Thoughts arise—”I shouldn’t have done that.” But understand that disciplining children is not wrong. It is much like vaccination—it strengthens them. If a child never hears a firm word at home, even a small criticism outside can shatter them.

A mother is a child’s first teacher. Women nurture and educate their brothers, sons, and fathers. In this sense, every woman is a Guru.

If we look at the roles women play, it is difficult to define what they do—rather, it is easier to say what they do not do! Women truly are the backbone of society.

Taking Care of Oneself

Today, women contribute immensely at home, in society, and in the nation. Amidst all these responsibilities, they must also take care of their health and mental well-being.

Often, women become so absorbed in their duties that they neglect themselves entirely. This directly affects their emotional health, making them vulnerable to stress and depression. That is why every woman must take time for herself—nurturing her body, mind, and soul. She is not just a caretaker of others but a strong, self-reliant, and joyful individual.

Recognizing Your Inner Strength

Women must recognize their own strength and never see themselves as victims. When you think of yourself as a victim, you lose energy, enthusiasm, and confidence—you confine yourself to a limited mindset.

If you constantly feel guilty, you become trapped in self-blame. The spiritual path frees you from both the victim mindset and the burden of guilt. So, stop blaming yourself and start appreciating yourself—because appreciation is a divine quality.

Be the Change in Society

There are changes needed in society for the betterment of women. But never think, “I am being discriminated against because I am a woman.” You can bring about change without seeing yourself as a victim.

When you witness injustice, take a stand. No one can harm you. You just assune you have the rights. You do not have to demand them from anyone. You are much stronger than you think!
