PROJECT BREATHE
Under the Global Grant scheme of The Rotary Foundation
Every year in India, 2.6 million babies die in first 28 days of life; most in the first week. India contributes to one-fifth of global live births and more than a quarter of neonatal deaths in the world. Therefore it is evident that the neonatal period is crucial to every child’s life.
While there is an unquestionable need to have more numbers of trained doctors available in healthcare institutions, some part of this crisis can also be addressed through infrastructural requirements
The Project’s Primary goal is to give all new born babies a better chance at survival through use of high end state of the art ventilators in the NICU, to provide Pre term babies less than 1 kg in weight, a chance to survive. Also Better quality of care to the babies requiring Ventilator or Incubator support post a surgery or due to Covid or any other reason.
The NICU – Neonatal ICU at Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital, Nungambakkam Chennai is the beneficiary on this project. They were in pressing need of upgraded state of art Ventilator with embedded phenomenal advancement in the newborn ventilation which was especially useful in providing quality care in extremely low birth weight newborn (<1 kg) and those with COVID pneumonia. NICU unit also has ELBW (Extremely Low Birth Weight) admissions of over 500/ year.
Through this project Rotary Club of Madras East in partnership with Rotary cCub of Macerata ( RID 2090, Italy) and the Rotary Foundation, dedicated an Advanced Neonatal Ventilator and Incubator (Care Station) to upgrade the NICU facility at this Hospital for a Project Value of approx.
