Chennai, November 2023: MGM Cancer Institute a part of MGM Healthcare, today inaugurated the specialized Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) and Radiation Oncology units. The two units were inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Jayantha Balawardane, MBBS, MD, FRCP (Lond), FRCP (Edin), FCOLS, Senior Consultant Oncology, Executive Director – KDU (Kothalawala Defence University), Sri Lanka in the presence of Dr. M. A. Raja, Senior Consultant – Medical Oncology & Director – Oncology Services, MGM Cancer Institute and Mr. Harish Manian, CEO, MGM Healthcare.
The newly launched Bone Marrow Transplant unit signifies a significant leap forward in cancer care. Tailored for patients grappling with haematological disorders like leukaemia, lymphoma, and genetic disorders, BMT involves the transplantation of healthy bone marrow cells or stem cells to replace damaged or diseased marrow. This procedure opens avenues for remission or cure by restoring the body’s ability to produce healthy blood cells essential for immune function. The institute’s commitment to leading-edge technology ensures preparedness to address a diverse range of blood disorders.
The BMT unit encompasses cutting-edge technology, empowering a dedicated team of doctors, including hemato-oncologists and medical oncologists, to tackle a wide spectrum of blood disorders. Their collective expertise ensures patients not only receive specialized care but also benefit from a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach that addresses every facet of well-being.
The Radiation Oncology unit, anchored by a state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator (Linac), introduces advanced radiation therapies such as 3DCRT, IMRT, IGRT, RGRT, VMAT, SRT, SRS, SBRT, and IGBT. These precision treatments maximize therapeutic impact while minimizing effects on healthy tissues.
Reflecting on the inauguration, Prof. Dr. Jayantha Balawardane commended MGM Cancer Institute, stating, ” MGM Cancer Institute is doing a fabulous job in terms of providing holistic care to cancer patients, wherein the treatment process starts with defeating the ‘fear of cancer’ in the patients’ minds first before treating the cancer. The commitment extends beyond medical excellence to ensure an environment that nurtures hope and healing. I would like to thank the management at MGM for having me here today for the inauguration of the BMT and Radiation Oncology units, and I wish them all the best in their journey towards giving cancer patients a good and convenient treatment experience.”
Dr. M. A. Raja emphasized the unique features of the BMT suites and Radiation Oncology Department, stating, ” Our dedication to delivering the utmost standards of care remains steadfast, and this facility stands as a testament to that unwavering commitment. Armed with our exceptional team of experts and state-of-the-art technology, we are positioned to establish new benchmarks in both patient outcomes and the overall quality of care.”
Mr. Harish Manian, CEO of MGM Healthcare, said, “At MGM, it is our never-ending endeavour to create benchmarks and constantly reinvent. We do understand that fighting cancer is not an easy job…for patients or for the treating doctors. In addition to cancer specialists, our dedicated team includes a range of specialists offering emotional support, nutritional guidance and palliative care. We believe in a sustainable methodology by adopting a responsible attitude towards the healthcare needs of our patients. This ethos sits at the heart of MGM and the way we work. The two units that we are inaugurating today at MGM Cancer Institute are very much in line with this belief.”
