Gleneagles Global Health City launches 24×7 Advanced Hand Injury Clinic

Chennai, 6th March 2023: The Department of Plastic, Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery, Gleneagles Global Health City has launched the Advanced Hand Injury Clinic at Gleneagles Global Clinic campus, Adyar. The Hand injury clinic was inaugurated by Mr. Alex Paul Menon, IAS, Development Commissioner, MEPZ -SEZ – Tambaram, Chennai in the presence of Dr. S Selva Seetharaman, HOD – Institute of Plastics & Reconstructive surgery, Gleneagles Global Health City and Dr. Alok Khullar, CEO, Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai.

The 24×7 clinic houses qualified plastic, hand, and microvascular surgeons, a high-end state-of-the-art operation theater & cutting-edge technology microscope(s). Apart from these, there is a nine-member dedicated and comprehensive team for complete care & rehabilitation. The Advanced Hand Injury Service manages the entire spectrum of hand injuries including the following: Amputation (total separation) of fingers, thumb and hand, fingertip injuries, nail injuries, fractures of wrist/hand bones, burns of hand, nerve, vessel, and tendon injuries, industrial accidents to hand and cut injuries to the forearm.

The hand is the most complex organic machine, with multiple structures like tendons, nerves, ligaments, blood vessels, and bones. These are arranged intricately in a compact space to achieve maximum movement and function in the most efficient way. Any injury to the hand has the potential to damage any of these structures. Even a trivial cut can injure vital structures which are confined in a narrow space.

The first-of-its-kind specialized hand clinic at Gleneagles Global Clinic will undoubtedly assist individuals of all ages in receiving complete care for tendon and nerve injuries, fractures, dislocations, strains, amputations, carpal tunnel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and other arthritic conditions, as well as many other hand problems. Gleneagles Global Health City is dedicated to helping people by using a cutting-edge strategy, said Dr. Alok Khullar, CEO, Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai

“Hand injuries, if not managed properly, can have short- and long-term consequences, and could make the individual handicapped. The time of intervention also plays a major role in the overall result. The earlier the management, the better the outcome. Hence, all injuries to the hand should be treated early, by surgeons specialized in hand surgery,” added Dr Alok khullar.

“In fact, the better the chances are for the injured, if he is managed by a person who has received proper training and if the treatment is given at the earliest,” said Dr. Alok Khullar.

Dr. S Selva Seetharaman, HOD – Institute of Plastics & Reconstructive surgery, Gleneagles Global Health City said, “We have a team of 9 plastic surgeons in-house and available round the clock. We have witnessed most hand injuries reported from the manufacturing and Industrial sector. Unfortunately, smaller industries lack awareness when it comes to hand injuries. One should be aware that hand injuries can be treated, and the injured person can even be saved from permanent disability If timely treatment is provided.

It is guesstimated, 20 percent of hand injuries lead to permanent disability and the reasons could be limited or zero on-time treatment or even availability of resources. As Chennai and its suburbs are gaining prominence with industries being established the chances of hand injuries can also be higher. To circumvent these situations, the Gleneagles Hospital intends to create an awareness program by visiting industries every month added Dr Selva

Gleneagles Global Health City has a plan to visit industries every month in the city and give awareness on hand injuries and what one should do when a hand is injured. There are so many dos and dont’s that one should follow when it comes to hand injuries as there are very sensitive nerves, tendons and cells that can be damaged if not handled properly.  We further intend to launch a brochure on this,” added Dr Selva
