Gleneagles Global Health City Achieves Milestone of 504 Kidney Transplants

Chennai, 28th March 2023: Gleneagles Global Health City has announced its successful completion of 504 kidney transplants. The Department of Nephrology & Renal Transplantation has to date performed kidney transplants for both paediatrics and adults with 22 transplants comprising babies and children and 482 adults. Of the 482 adults, 156 were women recipients and 348 constituted men. To commemorate this milestone, eminent guest Sri Tenkasi S Jawahar, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary & Project Director, World Bank Aided Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation Project participated in the celebration with the Kidney transplant donors and recipients. The participants talked about how their lives had returned to normal after having a kidney transplant.

“We are proud to state the Department of Nephrology & Renal Transplantation at Gleneagles Global Hospital has successfully completed 500+ Kidney transplants since its first kidney transplant was performed in 2009. It is a remarkable achievement for our hospital and a one-of-a-kind record in the world of kidney transplants,” said Dr. Alok KhullarCEO, Gleneagles Global Health City.

“This is no small feat to achieve for any hospital in India. Though we are already leading in kidney transplants, we are still lagging behind developed countries. There is a lack of awareness when it comes to kidney transplants that need to be addressed and we are making every effort to educate the public about the success rates,” added Dr. Alok.

Dr. Muruganandham K, HOD & Senior Consultant – Department of Urology, Gleneagles Global Health City said, The number of cadaver donor kidney transplants stood at 208 & live donor kidney transplant was 296 with 35 plus kidney transplants being crowd funded. It is of national importance that organ donations increase and this is only possible when people come forward to donate willingly. Today, it is only the family and relatives of the recipient who donate first. We need more NGOs to come forward and help us in this cause,”.

“Statistically speaking, out of these 504 transplants – under the live donor kidney transplants, 47% was donated by mothers, 19% by the spouse, 12% by the sister, 8% by the brother and 14% were others. The youngest and oldest donor was a 20-year-old female and a 65-year-old male respectively. The recipient in the youngest category was a three-year girl and the oldest recipient was a 68-year-old male,” added Dr. Muruganandham

Incidentally, not every successful kidney transplant was easy to perform. The Hospital had many challenging cases that were rare and truly unique too. For instance, there was a pediatric high-risk transplant of a 16-year girl who suffered fromSyndromic CKD – Ctin + RP. Another was a 17-year boy who had Refractory HTN –S/P Bilateral Nephrectomy and Low-Capacity Bladder. There are many more cases that we have performed kidney transplants on,” said Dr. Muthukumar P, Senior Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician, Gleneagles Global Health City

“In the Adult high-risk transplant category there was a 45-yearmale who had Refractory Anemia/Bicytopenia, Diabetic Polyneuropathy and another was a 22-year male with MultipleCongenital Anomalies with Spina Bifida. There was a 30-year-old female with a Type I Diabetic / CKD end-stage whom we successfully ensured she had a kidney transplant,” added Dr.Muthukumar.
