MV Diabetes and Prof. M. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre, Royapuram, Chennai, set a remarkable record on 10/11/2024 by organizing a large-scale event where over 1,000 students performed therapeutic yoga asanas to raise awareness about diabetes. This event, organized in honor of World Diabetes Day 2024, aimed to highlight the benefits of yoga in managing and preventing diabetes.
As part of their ongoing commitment to public health and diabetes education, MV Diabetes brought together school students aged 11-17 to participate in this record-setting event. The occasion was graced by Chief Guest Prof. R. Elangovan, a distinguished Yoga Chikitsa Acharya from the Indian Yoga Association and the first professor of yoga appointed in Tamil Nadu’s government universities. Prof. Elangovan addressed the audience, emphasizing the importance of incorporating yoga into daily life for overall well-being.
Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, Head and Chief Physician at MV Diabetes and claimant of the Asia Book of Records title, spoke to the gathering, noting, “This initiative aligns with the World Diabetes Day theme of ‘Well-Being,’ which is being highlighted over the next three years. The positive impact of yoga on physical and mental health, especially in those with diabetes, is backed by scientific research conducted at our center.” He further explained that studies have shown regular yoga practice can improve glycemic control, blood pressure, sleep quality, and lipid levels, while also potentially reducing medication requirements. Dr. Viswanathan shared that their findings have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, underscoring the hospital’s dedication to advancing diabetes care.
Mr. Vivek Nair, the official adjudicator from Asia Book of Records, was present to confirm and validate the record. The organization, renowned for showcasing remarkable achievements across Asia, awarded today’s event under the ‘Mass Attempt’ category, adding it to their extensive database of over 40,000 record entries.
Guest of Honour, Dr. Vasantha Gowri and Dr. D.P. Siva Saktibalan, Principal of KRM Public School, also shared their insights on how yoga can
be a powerful tool in managing diabetes. Dr. Vasantha Gowri, Founder and Director of Adithya Eye Care, attended to support the cause.
