Chennai, March 2026: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, continues its efforts to strengthen quality consciousness and technical competence within the industry through capacity-building programmes.As part of its Capsule Course initiative, the BIS Chennai Branch Office organised Capsule Training Courses on “Polyvinyl Chloride Insulated Cables/Cords as per IS 694” and “Stainless Steel Utensils as per IS 14756)” on 12 & 13 March 2026 at its Southern Regional Office, Taramani, Chennai, for Quality Control Personnel from the industry.The sessions were conducted by Shri Sreejith Mohan J, Scientist-D / Joint Director and Shri Gowththam B J, Scientist-D / Joint Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office.The courses witnessed active participation from Quality Engineers, Quality Managers, Senior Managers, Quality Inspectors and Supervisors representing the relevant manufacturing industries. The objective of the Capsule Courses was to enhance participants’ understanding of the respective Indian Standards, along with the associated certification procedures, thereby enabling industry professionals to effectively comply with quality and safety requirements prescribed under national standards.The technical sessions included detailed discussions on the relevant Indian Standards—IS 694 for electrical cables and cords and IS 14756 for stainless steel utensils—along with provisions of the Product Manual, Scheme of Inspection and Testing (SIT), specific guidelines and record- keeping requirements for BIS product certification.Further sessions elaborated on important aspects of the BIS Product Certification Scheme, including procedures related to Grant of Licence, Inclusion, Renewal, Operation of Licence, Deferment, Expiry and Dormancy of licences, as well as key features of the e-BIS portal. Interactive discussions and clarification sessions enabled participants to engage directly with the faculty and gain practical insights into compliance requirements.On the second day, participants were taken to the BIS Southern Regional Laboratory (SRL), Taramani, where practical demonstrations of testing methodologies for critical parameters under the respective standards were conducted with the support of the SRL team. This hands-on exposure helped participants better understand laboratory testing procedures and the importance of maintaining conformity with Indian Standards.The programmes concluded with feedback and interactive closing sessions, where participants appreciated the detailed technical guidance and practical orientation of the training programmes. Certificates were presented to all participants upon successful completion of the courses. BIS regularly conducts Capsule Courses and training programmes to create awareness about Indian Standards and to support industries in improving product quality and compliance with National Standards.
