The Centre of Excellence for Comprehensive Cleft and Craniofacial Care at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education & Research (SRIHER) stands as a dedicated centre offering advanced and holistic treatment for patients with cleft lip, cleft palate, and complex craniofacial conditions. The uniqueness of this Centre (CCCC) lies in its comprehensive, multidisciplinary care under one roof. More than 100 beneficiaries along with their parents attended this event.
The centre has been inaugurated by Dr. DushyantPrasad, Executive Director, Akhila Bharatha MahilaSeva Samaja (ABMSS) today in the presence of Ms.Samyuktha Venkataachalam, Trustee, Sri RamachandraEducational and Health Trust and Dr. Uma Sekar, Vice Chancellor.
Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Prasad stated that ABMSS is extending financial support for cleft lip surgeries across 28 centres throughout India and this is the first such supported centre in Tamil Nadu. He emphasised the need to create widespread awareness to ensure that no child is left untreated and called for collective efforts to eradicate this correctable deformity.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Naveen Kumar, Director, Sri Ramachandra Comprehensive Cleft and Craniofacial Care centre said that this centre has been providing advanced treatment at free of cost to thepatients with Cleft Lip, Palate, and Craniofacial Anomalies over two decades. Until now, more than 20,000 patients have been benefited. An NGO from Canada Transforming faces and ABMSS areproviding financial support for this cause. Apart from these primary donors, City Union Bank and several other individuals are also extending their financial support.
This project is structured to provide holistic care through a multidisciplinary team approach under one roof. The core team includes specialists from the Departments of Anesthesia, Audiology, Cardiology, Clinical Nutrition, Clinical Psychology, Neurosurgery,Neurology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Otorhinolaryngology, Paediatric Medicine, Pedodontics, Public Health Dentistry, and Speech Language Pathology.
Cleft lip and palate has an incidence of 1 in 700 live births. Common causes for this condition are iron deficiency or malnutrition during pregnancy, marriage within family, alcohol consumption during pregnancy etc…
This condition affecting the face causes significant social and functional distress to the patient as well as family. Management of this condition starts from the time it is identified by an ultrasound scan of the pregnant mother till adulthood, through multidisciplinary approach involving experts from a wide range of medical specialities, he added.
