ASSAM ASSOCIATION CHENNAI (AAC) CELEBRATES SHRI KRISHNA JANMASHTAMI

Chennai, September 15, 2025: Assam Association Chennai (AAC) celebrated, the auspicious festival of Shri Krishna Janmashtami with devotion, joy, and cultural vibrancy at Assam Bhavan, Pallikaranai, Chennai.

This year’s main highlight was the enthusiastic participation of children, who took centre stage in a series of soulful presentation of Assamese naam, under the guidance of Youth and Kids Development committee, AAC and a play based on Lord Krishna’s incarnation.

Janmashtami is a special moment for all Assamese families in Chennai to come together and celebrate it on Ashtami tithi of Assamese Bhado month. The festival creates a bridge across generations, AAC focuses on passing our age old culture to our children as they learn devotional practices directly from elders—whether in singing Assamese naam or performing in a play based on Lord Krishna’s incarnation. The sounds of taal, khol, nagera added to the pomp and vigour of the celebration.

The program was organised by the Cultural committee, AAC, included prayers, Kirtan path, naam by elders led by Gautam Kumar Bailung, naam by ladies led by Bornali Bailung, naam by children presented under the guidance of Mowkunhi Baruah, atheatrical drama on the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, “Narasimha Avatar” prepared and directed by Brindabon Bordoloiand the traditional Bhog prepared and offered by AAC. By placing children at the heart of the celebrations, AAC seeks to pass on age-old traditions to the next generation while creating a joyful atmosphere for the entire community.

It is also noteworthy that this year AAC has organised Bhado mohiya naam for the first time on every Sunday of auspicious month of Bhado. Assamese families have been gathering every Sunday since the very beginning  of this auspicious month at the premises of Assam Bhavan, joining in with prayers, naam, and to uphold this deeply spiritual tradition.

While most parts of India observed Janmashtami on 16th August, Assamese tradition celebrates it on Ashtami tithi of auspicious Assamese month of Bhado, following the Assamese lunar calendar. This distinct practice reflects the community’s deep roots in Vaishnavite culture and its commitment to preserving the spiritual calendar handed down through generations.

“Janmashtami is not just a festival, it is a source of moral and ethical guidelines of Krishna’s life for both children and parents from all age groups to follow. We take this event as a tool toinfluence our children to sing naam, perform drama, serve Bhogand communicate spiritual and cultural heritage of Assam in Chennai,” said Gautam Deori, President of AAC.

The celebration was open to all, with community members and guests invited to join in the devotional music, performances, and fellowship.
