Dim sum, meaning “touch the heart” in Cantonese, refers to a variety of bite-sized dishes traditionally served with tea. Its origins trace back to the Song dynasty (960–1279), when royal chefs crafted diverse dishes, including minced pheasant and lark tongue, as well as desserts made from steamed milk and bean paste.
The practice of enjoying these small dishes with tea, known as “yum cha”
In the 19th century, particularly in Guangzhou, the tradition of dim sum evolved into a more structured dining experience. Teahouses began offering a wider array of dim sum items, and the practice of selecting dishes from carts became common. This period marked the development of specialized dim sum restaurants.
The ‘Sum of Dimsum Festival’ will feature an expansive menu, showcasing an array of traditional and innovative dim sums such as Lamb Jiao-zi with Mala Sauce, Fire Cracker Prawns, Black Princess Veg, Truffle Asparagus and Lotus Root and many more inspired by the diverse culinary traditions of Asia.
