ICWO – Indian Community Welfare Organisation – Just Rights for Children organized the Nationwide launch of a National Program titled “Child Marriage FREE Bharat” in Chennai, Tamilnadu on 27th November 2024, 10:30a.m. at ICWO Head Office, AP-216, 18th Main Road, ’I’ Block, 6th Street, Vallalar Colony, Anna Nagar West, Chennai-600040.
The Chief Guest Mr.Rajkumar Muthukrishnan, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee – Chennai, South inaugurated the Huge Banner on the occasion of the Nationwide launch of a National Program “Child Marriage FREE Bharat” in Chennai, Tamilnadu.
Mr.Natharsha Malim.H, State Coordinator, AVA – Association for Voluntary Action speaking on the occasion said that the honorable supreme court of India issued a guidelines to ensure that the strict enforcement of prohibition of child marriage act of 2006. Further to appoint exclusive Child Marriage Prohibition Officer across the country. He continues to said that, awareness alone is not enough to prevent child marriage effectively. Enforcement of laws, community engagement and support systems for vulnerable children are equally crucial. Number of cases leading to FIR is relatively low across the states compared to the number of marriages reported, highlighting the potential gaps in implementation of the act and legal action.
Mr.A.Bakthavatchalam, Member, Child Welfare Committee – Chennai, South released the Awareness E-Poster have released the Awareness E-Poster.
Speaking on the occasion Mr.A.J.Hariharan, Secretary-ICWO said Child marriage is a social evil and a violation of law that hampers girls’ education, protection, health and development, and prevents them from realizing their dreams.Child marriage is one of the worst forms of violations of human rights and is a major impediment in achieving the objective.
ICWO a leading nonprofit organization working on the issues that affect the children including trafficking, child marriage and child labour. The organization is part of India’s leading network (Just Rights for Children) of civil society organizations working for child protection and for prevention of crime and violence against children in accordance with India’s Constitution and laws.
The network organizations and activists across the country is working to stop this social evil by creating awareness among people against child marriage. Child marriage is a cruel attack on human freedom, dignity, social morality, equality and inclusiveness. We demand from the government and all political parties to promote education of children, especially girls, by increasing the age limit of free education to 18 years. We consider child marriage as a social evil and legal crime. We aim to reduce the child marriages from 23.3% to 10% by the year 2025 and to make India child marriage free by 2030.”

The historical launch of “Child Marriage Free Bharat Campaign” was successfully organized by ICWO in association with Just Rights for Children. The program includes the awareness generation, candle light and oath taking event. The program was actively participated by over 250 persons including; Magistrates, CWC Members, Child Social Activists, Social Workers, AHTC – Anti Human Trafficking Club Members, College Students, College Professors, Media Personnels and general public.
