Avid Tennis player in Chennai with 100%  Blockages in Two Major Coronary Arteries, Underwent Coronary Angioplasty Stenting, Sans Bypass surgery

Chennai, January 6th2023: A 28-year-old man an active Tennis Player in Chennai visited Promed Hospital,  a multispecialty hospital at Kottivakkam, Chennai with a complaint of severe chest pain with minimal exertion for months. He had already undergone angiography at a private hospital in Chennai, which revealed that the patient’s two out of three coronary arteries, circumflex, LAD (left anterior descending artery) were completely blocked, and the third vessel RCA (Right Coronary artery) had a significant blockage. He was recommended for bypass surgery at three different hospitals in 2 metropolitan cities. The patient was unwilling to undergo bypass surgery at that age and was looking at non-surgical options. 

The patient was referred to Dr. Arun Kalyanasundaram, an eminent Interventional cardiologist and Director of Promed Hospital, Chennai, who specialised in complex Coronary Interventions and Chronic Total Occlusion. Dr. Arun after examining the patient decided to perform complex coronary angioplasty with stenting. The patient was able to revascularize the RCA, and the 100 % blockages of both major vessels in the left system (circumflex and LAD) with drug-coated stents, utilizing advanced CTO techniques and intravascular imaging. Post-procedure the patient recovered very well and got discharged from the hospital within 2 days of the procedure. He resumed his active lifestyle and started playing tennis.

Speaking about the double CTO procedure Dr Arun Kalyanasundaram said,  “As the patient was unwilling to bypass surgery, we decided to perform the complex procedureto clear the 100 % blocks in both the arteries. We managed to open these complex blocks with the latest advanced CTO techniques both the blocks got opened completely and non-surgically. With today’s breakthrough in interventional cardiology, any blockage can be opened by skilled professionals non-surgically, allowing patients to resume normal lives in a short period of time after complete revascularization, added Dr. Arun.
