Following revision THR,a 95/F patient who had been completely bedridden for 2 years with severe hip pain was able to walk, emphasising that age is not an important factor. Additionally, the patient has been totally blind for the past five years as a result of diabetic retinopathy. The patient underwent a primary THR for left hip femoral neck fracture by Prof.Dr.Nandkumar Sundaram in 1998.
23 years later, the patient has been planned for revision elsewhere on account of implant loosening. But the attempt was unsuccessful, and only the removal of implants with Girdlestone arthroplasty could be done. Thereby making the patient completely bedridden, with severe pain and a shortened limb (3.5cm).
The patient, being unhappy and depressed and wanting to mobilise and be independent, consulted Prof. Dr. NankumarSundaram. After which, the patient was planned for revision THR (imported implants) with a metal backing cup and bone graft, which has never been done for a 95-year-old patient. Although the patient’s age was a concern with added comorbidities, the procedure was properly planned and explained to the patient and her relatives.
Surgery was carried out by a group of Orthopaedic surgeons under the leadership of Prof. Nandkumar Sundaram,Dr. Thiruvenkata Prasad, and Dr. Arun Prasad, and Anaesthesiologists Dr. Vidhya Mohanram and Dr.Shinu. The surgery was successful and was done within 2 hours. Postoperatively, Patent was pain-free and was able to independently sit and stand. The patient and her relatives were very happy with the outcome achieved.
This patient is living proof that with proper planning and modern implants, it is still possible to achieve a pain-free and independent life even at this age. The patient is going to be interviewed today. Kindly publish this article, as this could serve as an awareness campaign for the general public and the medical fraternity as well.
