Chennai: Capstone Multi-Speciality Clinic is reinforcing the importance of adult vaccination as a key pillar of preventive healthcare following the launch of its dedicated Adult & Travel Vaccination Services on April 10 at its facility in Chennai.
While vaccination is commonly associated with childhood immunisation, medical experts highlight that protection against several infections remains equally important in adulthood. Immunity can decline over time, particularly after the age of 50, increasing susceptibility to infections and related complications.
Despite this, adult immunisation rates in India remain significantly low. Studies indicate that coverage for key adult vaccines such as influenza, pneumococcal disease and hepatitis B is typically below 2% in the general population. Among adults aged 45 years and above, uptake has been reported at around 1.5% for influenza, 0.6% for pneumococcal vaccines, and approximately 1.9% for hepatitis B and typhoid vaccines, highlighting a substantial gap in preventive care.
Capstone Multi-Speciality Clinic, a multi-speciality outpatient healthcare centre in Chennai, is working to create greater awareness around this need, especially among individuals with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, liver disease and kidney disease, who may be at a higher risk of severe illness.
Evidence also points to gaps in both awareness and practice. In one study among patients with diabetes, less than 10% had received influenza or pneumococcal vaccines, while nearly 85% were unaware that their condition increases the risk of complications from such infections.
The clinic notes that vaccine requirements for adults can vary depending on age, health status, co-morbidities, lifestyle, occupation and travel needs. In addition to older adults, vaccination may also be relevant for students, travellers, individuals planning pregnancy, and those with specific medical conditions.
Vaccines commonly recommended for older adults may include protection against influenza, pneumonia, shingles, tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, while other vaccines may be advised based on individual health profiles and circumstances.
“Preventive healthcare should not begin only after illness. Adult vaccination is an important part of long-term wellness, especially for older adults and those with underlying health conditions. With the launch of our Adult & Travel Vaccination Services, we aim to make preventive care more accessible, informed and personalised, so that individuals can take timely steps to protect their health,” said Dr. V. Ramasubramanian, Co-Founder & Director – Medical Services, Capstone Multi-Speciality Clinic.
As part of its preventive care offering, the clinic provides adult and travel vaccination services, supported by counselling and guidance tailored to individual needs. The clinic also offers medical counselling for individuals with co-morbidities and those with specialised health considerations, including autoimmune conditions, cancer and organ transplant-related concerns.
Founded by Dr. V. Ramasubramanian and Dr. Aruna Mohan, Capstone Multi-Speciality Clinic is built around a collaborative, patient-focused approach to outpatient care, with an emphasis on ethics, expertise and empathy. Through this initiative, the clinic aims to make preventive healthcare more structured, accessible and relevant for adults across age groups.
With preventive health becoming increasingly important, Capstone Multi-Speciality Clinic hopes to encourage more individuals to view adult vaccination not as an exception, but as an essential part of routine health management.
