BIS, CHENNAI GRANTS FIRST ISI LICENCE IN THE COUNTRY FOR ELECTRIC GRINDER, ELECTRIC HAMMER AND GUIDE RAILS FOR LIFTS.

Chennai, March 24, 2026: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, organized “MANAK SAMVAD” meeting at the BIS Chennai Branch Office, C.I.T Campus, Taramani, Chennai.

The highlight of the programme was the handing over of BIS licence for use of ISI mark on Electric Power tools namely Grinder, Hammer to M/s. Bosch Limited and Guide rails for Lifts to M/s. Savera India Riding Systems Company P Ltd, for the first time in the country. Certificates were also formally handed over to 33 newly licensed manufacturers across various sectors, whose BIS licences were granted during the months of January and February 2026.

The programme commenced with a Welcome Address and Programme Objectives by Shri S. D. Dayanand, Scientist-F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office, who welcomed all new licensees into the BIS system. He emphasized that Indian Standards play a pivotal role in nation-building by enhancing product quality, safety, and reliability across industries. He further highlighted that adherence to standards not only enhances the competitiveness of Indian manufacturers but also strengthens national infrastructure and supports the vision of building a quality-driven economy.

Subsequent technical sessions included a detailed presentation on the operation of BIS licence by Shri Sreejith Mohan J, Scientist-D / Joint Director, BIS Chennai, followed by a session on the Roles and Responsibilities of Licensees by Shri Gowththam B J, Scientist-D / Joint Director, BIS Chennai, who outlined the compliance expectations and key obligations of licence holders.

The programme also included the distribution of welcome kits, followed by an interactive Open House session where licensees shared their queries and feedback with BIS officials. The participants appreciated the ease and transparency in the BIS liclensing process.

BIS oversees key national quality assurance schemes including Product Certification (ISI Mark & CRS), Management Systems Certification, Hallmarking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts, and Laboratory Services, all contributing to strengthening India’s quality ecosystem. Grant of BIS licence involves rigorous scrutiny of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control mechanisms, testing capabilities, and conformity to the relevant Indian Standards.
