Chennai, 14 February 2026: The third edition of the Sumangala CSR Scholarship Initiative, “Ungal Kuzhandayum Aagalaam Engineer”,continues to gain remarkable momentum, extending support to 19 new students this year. The First & Second Edition awardees were also recognized. In total 53 students will be supported through this initiative with the total scholarship commitment of Rs.212 Lakhs.
The Sumangala CSR Scholarship Initiative, “Ungal KuzhandayumAagalaam Engineer,” launched in 2023, is the company’s endeavourto help their community achieve its aspirations of making their children engineers. Sumangala covers their tuition fees for 3/4 years and gifts laptops.
Every worker in the construction industry and employees in steel dealerships has been working under qualified engineers for years. Naturally, they aspire for their children to become like the engineers they have worked for. Sumangala Steel, with its excellent understanding of steel, has consistently delivered high-quality TMT, making construction workers’ lives easier and more rewarding. These workers, in turn, have rewarded Sumangala with their trust and confidence.
In his address Mr. Rajendran Sabanayagam, CMD of Sumangala Steel said, “Construction workers and our own dealers are our extended family over the last 40 years. With the Sumangala Scholarship, we wish to play an even bigger part in their lives. This scholarship is our heartfelt initiative to aid their children achieve their dreams of becoming engineers.”

Today is a proud day as we hand over these engineering scholarships to the selected 19 awardees and their proud parents. The well-known actor and corporate trainer Mr. Mohan Ramanapplauded Sumangala’s initiative and while speaking on the occasion he said, ‘this is such a thoughtful gesture and a huge commitment from Sumangala Steel. I hope the construction workers of Tamil Nadu really take advantage of such an opportunity.”
Mr.K.P Sathyamurthy, the former Engineer-In-Chief of Tamil Nadu, a person who has overseen design and construction of many a major structure in Tamil Nadu over the last few decades, noted with happiness that this scheme will help new engineers rise from these families who otherwise could not afford the costs. It is an opportunity for “Yellorukkum Yellaam’ to shine through. A philosophy Tamil Nadu and its entire infrastructure is committed to.
Ashwin Sabanayagam, the president of Sumangala summarised it nicely. “We don’t just say Sumangala, thamizh naattin ul shakti. We will continue to do our best to show it through our steel and our deeds”.
Scholarship Highlights:
-Supports children of construction workers and steel dealership employees to become engineers.
-Available for both degree and diploma courses in engineering in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
-Eligible candidates are selected based on Plus Two marks with a minimum 70% cut-off.
-Awardees are chosen through a lucky draw beyond the basic eligibility.
-Sumangala Scholarship covers education costs up to a maximum of Rs. 1 lakh per year.
-Provides laptops to students embarking on their engineering studies.
