Kattankulathur, Tamil Nadu, August 12, 2025: SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (SRMMCHRC) concluded its week-long celebration of World Breastfeeding Week with a powerful valedictory function aimed at promoting breastfeeding awareness among parents, healthcare professionals, and the wider community.
Acclaimed South Indian actress, dancer, director, producer, and writer Ms. Poornima Bhagiyaraj graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour, delivering a heartfelt keynote address that underscored the irreplaceable value of breast milk.
“Even under harsh conditions, breast milk retains its nutritional value and protective qualities. It is nature’s perfect food for a newborn, and no manufactured formula can replicate it,” said Ms. Bhagiyaraj. “Breastfeeding builds immunity, strengthens the mother–child bond, and is more economical than formula feeding. My personal experience with my grandson has reinforced just how invaluable it is.”
The event was presided over by Dr. Nitin M. Nagarkar, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Medical and Health Sciences), whose continued support has been instrumental in advancing breastfeeding initiatives at SRMMCHRC. Organisers extended their gratitude to Dr. Nagarkar and Ms. Bhagiyaraj for their leadership and advocacy.
Dr. R. Venkatraman, Medical Superintendent, emphasised the importance of inclusive education:
“Creating awareness for both mothers and fathers is crucial. Programs like this help bridge the gap between medical knowledge and community understanding, ensuring that breastfeeding is valued and supported in every household.”
Dr. Subhash, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, reflected on the week’s activities:
“We’ve hosted inspiring talks, interactive sessions, and community outreach efforts. Breastfeeding is not just a medical recommendation—it is a vital public health measure.”
The event also celebrated academic excellence among students and professionals, and marked the launch of the latest edition of The Pink Footers magazine, featuring expert articles on maternal and child health.
As traditional support systems evolve, SRMMCHRC continues to lead the way in ensuring that breastfeeding awareness remains strong and accessible to all.
