“This record is not just about numbers. It’s about training our students to use their skills for a larger cause”, with these comments Dr. D. Antony Ashok Kumar, Director, SRM Institute of Hotel Management inaugurated the world record setting event for SRM’s Institute of Hotel Management where they created the first ever World record of making 1993 baked methu vadas and sambhar dishes.

These methu vada and sambhar dishes were arranged to form the emblems of SDG 2, Zero Hunger and the SRM IHMinsignia. The record-setting event was dedicated to commemorating the founding year, 1993, of the Institute. It was conducted at the SRM IHM- Ekkatuthangal, with both students and faculty representing the University and Vadapalani campuses.
The highlight of the event was the joint efforts of the 50 IHM students, who worked together to create close to 2000 baked sambhar methu vada dishes, using close to 60 kgs of dal and other bulk ingredients.
“The baked Methu Vada is our unique culinary innovation. Made from protein-rich lentils like urad dal and toor dal, along with fresh vegetables and soothing spices, this version of Sambar Methu Vada is not only delicious but also nutritionally healing,” added Dr. D. Antony Ashok Kumar while elaborating on the significance of the dish.
The Zero Hunger mission was implemented, with the Institute distributing food to orphanages and charitable homes through the efforts of the NGO, No Food Waste. This initiative demonstrated the practical fulfilment of Sustainable Development Goal 2- Zero Hunger.
This event of creating a world record was made possible under the leadership of Dr. C. Muthamizhchelvan, Vice Chancellor of SRM Institute of Science and Technology; Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Registrar, SRM IST; Ms. Harini Ravi, Correspondent, SRM Group of Institutions and Mr. R.A. Nadesan, Director of SRM Group, Vadapalani Campus.
