Chennai, May 30, 2025 – In commemoration of World No Tobacco Day, CAN-STOP, a community-based organization of Sundaram Medical Foundation Hospital, founded by Dr.Vijaya Bharathi Rangarajan in 1998 and dedicated to cancer support and awareness, partnered with Rotary District 3234 to organize an impactful awareness event at Anna Nagar Tower Park.
As part of the World No Tobacco Day observance this May, CANSTOP organized a series of activities aimed at raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco. Several free medical camps were conducted—offering oral and general screenings—specifically targeting slum areas, gypsy communities, and metro workers. Awareness talks were also held at various companies to educate employees about the risks associated with tobacco use.
A total of 1,053 beneficiaries were reached through these awareness and screening efforts across eight locations, resulting in the identification of 54 pre-cancerous cases, who were subsequently referred for follow-up treatment. In addition, a painting competition was conducted for children aged 5–15, and a sticker campaign was organized in central areas to raise awareness among auto drivers about the dangers of tobacco.
The main awareness event today featured a series of engaging activities, including an awareness talk, paraiattam, street theatre, mime, and a flash mob — all aimed at educating the public on the dangers of tobacco use. Free oral and general medical screening camps were also held from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM, offering essential health services to the community.
The awareness program, held from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM, was graced by the presence of Dr. B. Sneha Priya, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Anna Nagar, as the Special Guest. Rtn. N.S. Saravanan, District Governor of Rotary District 3234; Dr. Arjun Rangarajan, Trustee of Sundaram Medical Foundation; and Mr. Sachin Siva, Captain of the Indian Cricket Team for the Physically Challenged, joined as Guests of Honour, lending their support and sharing insights that underscored the significance of the initiative. The event witnessed an enthusiastic turnout, with over 400 people participating and engaging actively in the program.
Through this collaborative event, CANSTOP and Rotary District 3234 reaffirmed their shared commitment to raising awareness about tobacco-related health risks and promoting healthy, tobacco-free lifestyles. This partnership demonstrates the power of community-driven efforts in effecting positive change and advancing public health.
