World record event on self-examination of oral cavity SRM Kattankulathur Dental College and Hospital

KATTANKULATHUR, :
A record-breaking event of 4,000 students in the age group between 14 and 21 coming together under a single roof for an awareness programme and demonstration of self-examination to detect oral cancer, was held at SRM Kattankulathur Dental College and Hospital last week.
The event was organised by the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology. The students were taught about the importance and means for “self-detection” of the oral cavity that helped in detecting early signs of oral cancer. The training session was followed by students performing self-examination on them.
The students, through illustrations, and instructions were taught to lift their tongue and observe for any unusual colour change. The students were also coached on pressing their finger along the floor of the mouth to feel for any possible lumps, swellings or ulcers.
The students were asked to make a note of anything unusual and were told that through simple non-invasive tests, oral cavity disorders and even even oral cavity cancers could be prevented and treated if diagnosed early.
Among those who were present on the occasion included Pro Vice Chancellor, (Medical), Dr. Lt. Col. A.Ravikumar, Pro VC, FSH, Management, Law, Dr. A.Vinay kumar, Secretary, Indian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologist,Dr. Nadeem Jeddy,Dean (S&H), Dr. A.Duraisamy, Deputy Dean, S&H, Dr. S.Albert Antony Raj. The event was officially recorded by ‘Kalam’s Book of World Records.’ Certificates and medals were received by Vice Principal and Head of the Department, Prof. Dr. K.T Magesh,.
