SRMIST Founder Chancellor stresses the need to make a difference in the field of medical education Medical knowledge gets a big boost at SRMIST

It was a day when medical knowledge got a boost. Hippocrates Auditorium at SRM Medical College at Kattankulathur was filled with thunderous applause today when two books dealing with various nuances of ENT and Head, Neck and Skull – Skull-base surgery were launched by Dr T R Paarivendhar, Founder Chancellor of SRMIST.

Dr. Paarivendhar released ‘Essentials of ENT’ and the first copy was received by Dr P Sathyanarayanan (Pro-Chancellor of Academics at SRMIST). ‘Atlas of Head Neck and Skull-Base Surgery’ was also launched by the Founder Chancellor of SRMIST and the first copy went to Prof Dr Nitin M Nagarkar (Dean – Medical, SRMIST).

Essentials of ENT is authored by Prof Lt Col A Ravikumar, Pro Vice Chancellor, MHS and Dr Nitin M Nagarkar authored Atlas of Head Neck and Skull-Base Surgery. Co-authors of Essentials of ENT are Dr. Major S Prasanna Kumar, Professor and HOD of ENT Department at SRIHER and Dr. Shiva Priya J who is an Assistant professor at ENT department at SRIHER.

Essentials of ENT is an ENT textbook for MBBS students and the Atlas of Head Neck and Skull – -Base Surgery is a textbook for Head, Neck and Skull – Base Surgeons.

Speaking after the launch, Dr T R Paarivendhar stressed the need to make a difference in the field of medical learning.

‘Gone are the days when running a medical college used to remain a matter of great pride.’ It is now the time to focus on how different we stand and what value is added to education, said Dr Paarivendhar.

It is here the role of writing books for students to help them disseminate knowledge comes into prominence, said Founder Chancellor of SRMIST.

‘The prospects for coming up with books in the field of medicine are very good in India as there are a lot of case studies based on which useful materials for educating students could be brought out.’Case studies are about treatment procedures for the ailing and their recovery from the illness. They can be recorded, observed and analyzed to come up with useful study content, he said.

Dr P Sathyanarayanan said hope the books released today at the institution would gain the required recognition in the field of medical education. Students of medicine would continue to reap the benefits of these books, he said reminding that these books, he said reminding them that books would establish a legacy that survives for generations to come.

Teaching is important, however, writing a book and sharing the knowledge will have an impact that would last for many years, he said adding that taking this as an inspiration many more should come forward to write books for disseminating knowledge and leave an impression that lasts long.

Prof Lt Col A Ravikumar said the book was written with the aim of including theoretical knowledge while including essential practical aspects.

Dr. Major S Prasanna Kumar, Professor and HOD of ENT Department at SRIHER proposed a vote of thanks. Vice Chancellor of SRMIST, Prof C Muthamizhchelvan and Executive Council member of SRMIST, Prof S P Thyagarajan were among others present.
