SRM Medical College celebrates Doctors Day Research Conclave

Kattankulathur, July 12:

SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (SRM MCH & RC) was the cynosure of all eyes when it celebrated Doctors’ Day Research Conclave to highlight the contribution of doctors to the healthcare system. Registrar of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) Prof S Ponnusamy said 1st of July every year is celebrated as Doctors Day to honour the contribution of Dr B C Roy who attained great fame for his contributions towards the progress of health-care system.

It is an ideal occasion also to pay respects to the doctors for their services towards strengthening healthcare system in our country, he said. Services of physicians deserve a big salute, none can forget their selfless services during the pandemic time.

It was owing to their efforts that vaccines to mitigate the problem posed by Covid saw the light of the day, said SRMIST Registrar. Great amount of hard work of researchers, medical practitioners helped us prepare the vaccines quickly.

Stressing the importance of research, he said students from the medical fraternity must also play an active part in promoting research as it is essential in working out newer modes of treatment and medicines to heal the ailments.

Over 600 publications are being brought out in engineering wing of SRMIST per annum, said Prof Ponnusamy. I want students from the medical fraternity also to reach that extent.
Dr. Lt Col A Ravikumar, Pro Vice Chancellor (MHS) at SRMIST said achieving results in the field of research could only be possible after putting in great deal of efforts. Continous work is required to taste success, he said.

The landscape of higher learning is not the way it was earlier, innovation and research are now acquiring prominence. Learning does not mean mere absorption of subject knowledge and reproducing it. It is about innovative thinking, trying different ways to work out solutions to issues bothering us, said Dr Lt Col Ravikumar.

‘Students can try to do things differently which can later translate into research.’ Focus is now on even familiaring the undergraduate students also on the importance of research. He said Doctors Day is when we pay tributes to Dr B C Roy who is known for his contributions to the field of healthcare.

Dr B C Roy, the medical genius was a person who always believed in providing the best care to those in need of medical help, he said. Winners of poster presentation competition received prizes on the occasion.

Students of SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (SRM MCH & RC) presented over 110 posters on various issues related to healthcare as a part of the contest. Judges for the contest were also honoured.

One of the poster presented in the contest was the situational analysis of patients suffering grevious injuries in road accidents. It described the crash characteristics of road traffic accident of grievous injured patients.

Another poster presented in the contest described the biomedical waste management followed by professionals working in a tertiary healthcare hospital. Also among the posters was the one that highlighted cross sectional study on general, health, stress and self-esteem in medical and dental students at a tertiary teaching care hospital.

Nellaiappa Ganesan (Professor – General Medicine), Dr. C Shankar M S (Professor & HOD, Department of Ophthalmology
Chettinad Hospital & Research Institute) and Dr.A.P.Sambanthan (Former Professor of ENT) were the judges felicitated.

Winners of first prize in the poster presentation contest were Jayashri P, Varun Eshwar S, I. A.
Sameera Talat, Harshini H Gangolli, Arshiya S, Venugopal T, Carol Ann George, Akshita Lingamaneni, Sharon Mathew Panisseri L, Vikkasini K and Indrajit R.

Dr A Sharmila, Associate Dean (SA) at SRMMCHRC welcomed the gathering. Dr. K V Leela, Associate Dean (UG) at SRMMCHRC spoke about the research conclave. Associate Dean (QA) at SRMMCHRC proposed vote of thanks. Dr A Sundaram, Dean (Medical), SRMMCHRC was among those present.
