Chennai, October 2018: The Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and RR Donnelly, is conducting a wheelchair basketball development camp from 29 October 2018 to 4 November 2018 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Chennai.
The five-day development camp is organised for male players, along with a clinic for coaches from across India, in Chennai. The camp will have advanced players selected from the 5th National Wheelchair Basketball Championship, as well as beginner players (up to 19 years of age) and coaches nominated by 20 Indian states participating in it.
The camp will be headed by Joe Higgins, former head coach for Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team. He was also the coach for the Canadian women’s team which won the gold medal at the 1992 Paralympic Games in Barcelona and the senior men’s team which won the bronze medal at the 1994 World Championships. He has also served as the head coach of the Hong Kong Senior Men’s National Team and has been a guest coach and coaching educator in Germany.
He will be joined by Alphonsus To, a player for the Hong Kong Senior Men’s National Team. Popularly known as Fonzie, Alphonsus was awarded the 2017/2018 Hong Kong Athlete of the Year -Wheelchair Basketball and is currently a player for the Seattle Wheelchair Sonics (NWBA – Division I).

His experience, his willingness to mentor young players, and his insight into coaching methods will be beneficial to the participants. Having him on board will help us in our aim to increase India’s profile at the Paralympic Games.” says Madhavi Latha, President, WBFI and a National Paralympic Swimming Champion.
