UNDERSTANDING DIABETES WITH DR. V. MOHAN

Chennai, November 16th, 2019: Neuberg Diagnostics Private Limited, the fastest growing healthcare start-up in India which ranks among the top 4 diagnostic service providers in the country, organised a PEP (Patient Education Program) Talk by Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman & Chief of Diabetology, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre. Dr. Mohan spoke about “What’s new in preventing and combating diabetes.”

As per WHO India has 69.2 Million people living with diabetes (8.7 %) as per the 2015 data. Of these, it remained undiagnosed in more than 36 million people and Type 2 diabetes was the most prevalent form of the disease.  This indicated diabetes mellitus is reaching potentially epidemic proportions in India, making public awareness and preventive health initiatives the need of the hour to manage the health of the nation.

“We are honored to bring in Dr. Mohan to educate people about the growing concern in diabetes. Dr. Mohan has been delivering care to patients with diabetes across the country through his centers for many many years. He has also trained thousands of diabetologists in India and other developing countries.” said Dr. G. S. K. Velu, Chairman & Managing Director, Neuberg Diagnostics Private Limited.

Dr. V. Mohan needs no introduction. In addition to being the Chairman & Chief of Diabetology at Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, he is also the President and Director at the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation in Chennai. He has also contributed to scientific research on diabetes and serves on various national and international bodies in his field of specialisation. He has also won several prestigious awards including the Padma Shri by the Government of India for his accomplishments in the field of diabetology.

Giving an introduction to Diabetes, Dr. Mohan said, “Glucose is a key source of energy to our body and its metabolism is highly regulated by hormones like insulin and glucagon, diabetes is a condition that impairs the body’s ability to process blood sugar, leading to persistently high levels of glucose in the blood (hyperglycemia). There are different types of diabetes. The diagnosis of each one of these types is based on certain tests. The advantage of knowing which type of diabetes one has is that the treatment can be tailored accordingly.”

Stating that Nutrition and physical activity are important parts of a healthy lifestyle for diabetes patients, Dr. Mohan commented, “If you have diabetes, you need to keep an eye on what you eat, how much you eat and when you eat, and how active a lifestyle you lead. Eating well-balanced meals along with regular exercise is essential in managing diabetes. By making healthy food choices and understanding the “good” and “bad” carbohydrates, it can become very easy to control your blood glucose levels and avoid the development of diabetic complications. Nutrition and physical activity are important parts of a healthy lifestyle for diabetes patients.”

Dr. P. Srinivasan,  the Technical Director of Neuberg Ehrlich Laboratory said that “Over the past few decades, an increase in the neglect of personal health by the next generation is resulting in the increase in morbidity and mortality at a younger age. Type 2 Diabetes plays a major role in this. Screening, early diagnosis and adequate monitoring using appropriate tests is the key to prevent this problem. Keeping this in mind, Neuberg is available through its Anywhere Anytime 24×7 samples collection services to address this issue.” Customers may call 9700 36 9700 to book appointments.

A well-designed monitoring program can support early detection and management to help with a better quality of life post-diagnosis of diabetes.
