Chennai, April 1, 2017 – SSN College of Engineering hosted the grand finale of the Smart India Hackathon 2017, India’s first massive scale hackathon initiative, which was held for two days uninterruptedly. Hon’ble Minister of Human Resource Development, Shri. Prakash Javadekar inaugurated this initiative and Dr. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, AICTE addressed the gathering, simultaneously across 26 centres in the country. Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi also interacted with all the participants via video conference during the Hackathon at 10pm on 1st April.
The Smart India Hackthon is a part of Shri. Narendra Modi’s Digital India initiative and was launched on November 9, 2016. For this initiative, 29 different Government Ministries and Departments came together to pose 598 problem statements to 30 lakh technical students from across India. Over 10,000 technical students were selected to compete in the finale of the Smart India Hackathon with the aim of creating implementable and sustainable solutions to the 598 problem statements identified earlier. SSN was selected by the Ministry of HRD/AICTE as one of the 26 nodal centres to create solutions for problems related to Earth Sciences. Thiru K.P. Anbalagan, Hon’ble Minister, Higher Education including Technical Education, Electronics, Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu and Hon’ble Dr. Justice Anita Sumanth of the Madras High Court was the Chief Guest at the event and Mr. Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice Chairman of Cognizant was the Guest of Honor.
The 10000+ technical students across the country worked for 36 hours non-stop to build tools that the nation will benefit from. Several teams from SSN participated across centres in India. Smart India Hackathon is the world’s largest Hackathon and will be recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. The digital solutions that are created, will improve the functioning and governance of different Government Departments. It harnesses creativity and expertise of students, build funnel for ‘Startup India, Standup India’ campaign, crowdsources solutions for improving governance and quality of life, and provides opportunity to citizens to create innovative solutions to India’s daunting problems.

The Grand finale at SSN saw participation from 58 teams from across India comprising 360 students and over 120 industry mentors. The judges of the event were officials from the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The three winning teams received a prize money of Rs. 1 Lakh, Rs. 75,000 and Rs. 50,000, respectively. The winners and other selected teams became a part of the AICTE Start-up scheme, allowing them to gain a direct entry into the presentation round for securing funding for their business model.
