The theme pavilion showcases a large number of new and diversified products, which were developed by the R & D wing of the Central Silk Board. These products have the latest designs and are aimed at the fashion conscious and the young consumers.

Silk is a glorious gift of nature, Indian Silk has always  been and will continue to be a gift from India to her own consumers, and to the world at large. Embracing the nation’s diverse ethnicities and cultures, endless in its range of products, exciting in its unique and sensuous way… Indian Silk is our very own.

There are 4 types of silk – Eri, Tasar, Muga and Mulberry – and India is the only country that produces all of them. Eri, Tasar and Muga are wild silks produced in very limited quantities and are branded as ‘Vanya Silks’. Only the mulberry silkworm produces enough silk to somewhat meet the huge Indian and international demand.

India, besides being a silk producer, is also an importer, exporter and consumer of silk. India is the second largest silk producer and is also the largest consumer in the world. The saree industry consumes the lion’s share of the country’s domestic production of silk that is almost to the tune of 75%. While the traditional sarees are woven in handlooms, there are a few lightweight varieties, plain and printed, being woven in power-looms. Other items in production are dress materials, made-ups, ready-made garments, scarves and stoles, carpets and home furnishings.

And, amazingly, the Indian Silk industry is a cottage industry, practiced in 59,000 villages spread over 25 states in India!
