Agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan launched the ‘Sahodaris’ initiative by Diabetes in women worldwide Awareness Advocacy action Strategies (DIWWAAAS). ]
Dr. Suresh – Hon Secretary, VHS, Dr.Usha Sriram – HOD, TAG-VHS Endocrinology and Diabetes research centre, Balajee- President, Rotary IT City, Chennai, Jayalakshmi – Founder Sumaithangi Foundataion were present at the launch.
Speaking about the initiative, Dr.Usha Sriram – HOD, TAG-VHS said, ‘Sahodaris’ will give a comprehensive low cost diabetes care solution for women from low and very low resource settings.
Women with diabetes will receive completely free care [consultations, investigations, medications, sub specialty consultations] for 1 year, at the end of which they will have a good understanding of their diabetes and be empowered about self•management of diabetes and caregiving for people with diabetes
They will also be transitioned to ensure continued care at the end of the 12 months.
The uniqueness of this program is getting the women to know their diabetes, their health and become empowered to engage in self care that will put them on a lifelong trajectory of good health
A thorough baseline assessment of knowledge, barriers, beliefs, attitudes about diabetes, nutrition and physical activity, adherence to medications, stress, complications, coping mechanisms
Clinical assessment by diabetologist, lab investigations, eye, foot and gynae exam and therapy with nutrition, physical fitness advice and medications. Special attention to reproduction, bone health and behaviour modification. On a regular basis with team of diabetologists and educators/ specialists
Women will be motivated and encouraged to adhere to treatment regimens and taught coping skills “Usha Sriram further said, “Diabetes is on a rapid rise and particularly so in the lower socio economic groups. Women are affected differently and seriously by diabetes. When women from the lower socio economic group get diabetes, the consequences are serious, costly and destructive. Heart problems, Stroke, Cancer, Fracture and Depression are more common in women with diabetes. Unplanned pregnancies may lead to pregnancy
