Apollo Children’s Hospitals Successfully Performed the First Pediatric ENT Robotic surgery

Apollo Children’s Hospital restored hope for a Bangladeshi family by using a unique surgical approach to remove a deep throat cyst from a four year old boy. The child was battling with a growing cyst at the back of his tongue since 1 year.

Cysts, fluid-filled sacs that may develop within neck or gland tissue in children, have a tendency to become infected with bacteria and also can grow in size and obstruct the airway or swallowing passage. They need to be removed to avoid infection and relieve obstruction. The child from Bangladesh was brought to Apollo Children’s Hospitals with a rapidly growing cyst with swallowing problem.

The team of doctors at Apollo Children’s Hospital used imaging technologies and diagnosed a 4 cm Epidermoid cyst at the back of the child’s tongue (Deep Throat area). Usually such cysts are removed using microscopic/endoscopic procedures. Considering the location of the cyst, the specialist team at Apollo Children’s Hospitals concluded to do a Transoral Robotic Procedure to remove the cyst.

Robotic procedures in selected ENT patients with appropriate indications offers many benefits  like Shorter hospitalization, reduced pain and discomfort post-surgery, faster recovery time, smaller incisions-resulting in reduced risk of infection, reduced blood loss , avoidance of transfusion and an external scar.

Addressing the media Dr. Venkatakarthikeyan C, Consultant- ENT, Head and Neck Surgery, Apollo Children’s Hospitalsaid, “We used Robotic arms with 7 degree movements to perform this procedure as using Robotic technology magnifies the vision 10 times and provides a 3-D view of the surgical area. This enables us to visualize the procedure in much greater detail than in a traditional surgery. The small, precise movements that are possible with transoral robotic surgery offer huge advantages over standard surgical techniques.”

The child was successfully treated by Dr Venkatakarthikeyan C, Consultant ENT – Head & Neck Surgeon and his team. The patient’s recovery was remarkable. He is now pain free, eating normally and has adequate speech performance.

The Apollo Institute of Robotic Surgery is considered to be the best hospital for robotic surgery in India and is committed to providing patients with exceptional clinical outcomes. The state-of-the-art operating theatres are equipped with advanced robotic systems for minimally invasive surgery available today
