GAVS DRHM 2017(Dream Runners Half Marathon) drew the participation of an estimated 5000 runners from all over the country. As in the past 5 editions, the proceeds of the Run will be donated to FREEDOM TRUST for Prosthetic Limbs for the economically challenged sections of the society. The event, which saw several families running in support of the cause, was flagged off by Shri R Nataraj, presently Mylapore MLA and former Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu with few other eminent personality of city.
A modest beginning in 2012 has now grown to become a signature event on the marathon calendar of Chennai. From a mere 450 runners in the first edition in 2012, GAVS DRHM has grown admirably year after year, to about 5000 runners participating in 10km and 21.1km categories. Participants come from diverse walks of life, are of varied ages and with wide, unique capabilities. The event also sees 20% participation from women runners.
Members from 8 established chapters and 2 newly instituted training centres made up a large contingent, showcasing the positive influence of Dream Runners on the health and lifestyle landscape of the city. Many trainees, who have enrolled for the Dream Runners’ ‘free structured training’ program over the past 8 weeks, will have their first ‘big event ‘experience event.
It’s time to sweat to help out others. “Run, so they can walk”, says the tagline of 6thedition of GAVS DRHM (Dream Runners Half Marathon). The runners will go back a happy lot as they will be provided valuable merchandise like branded T-shirts, gym bags, and stainless steel water bottles as part of the race kit, in addition to the finishers medal. An officially timed event using timing chips, podium finishers in each of the 36 categories will be awarded trophies and prize money.
NEVER TOO OLD TO RUN
This edition of GAVS DRHM 2007 is innovative in having created a senior veteran category, a recognition of the fact that so many of our senior citizens have taken to running as a sport to keep themselves fit, agile and healthy.
• A 79 year ‘young’ Ms. Sundari running 10 Km AND
• A 71 year ‘young’ Mr. Ayyavoo running the 21k) lead the bandwagon of ‘seniors’
• The oldest runner in 10K event for male is Mr. V R Jayaraman, from Chennai, aged 76 years.
• The oldest Lady runner in Half Marathon 21.1km distance is Anuaradha Manoharan.
About GAVS DRHM2017: Founded in 2008 by fitness enthusiasts who wanted to change equation of fitness directly from gym to road running. Primarily, it was initiated to create awareness about fitness through running which was followed by the pursuit of goodwill to support causes such as suicide prevention and organ donation. Similar to the past two years, this year also DRHM is in association with Freedom Trust, an organization that provides Prosthetic Limbs for people from economically weaker sections of the society, to help with the proceeds of the event.
