Ford India Press Note :: Global Caring Month – Activity in Chennai

As part of its corporate social commitment towards a Better World, Ford has announced September as the Global Caring Month.

During September, volunteers from 14,000 strong workforce of Ford in India will engage in over 47 projects addressing education, auto safety, environmental sustainability and humanitarian support.

The Global Caring Month in Chennai started with the focus on Education. Through the first week, volunteers pledged to take up activities which will make the schools, a brighter place.

As a part of  Ford’s Digital Literacy programme, 1000 computers were distributed to 18 needy schools and institutions in Chennai, at an event conducted by the Rotary Club of Madras (South) on the occasion of Teachers Day. Mr. Michael Brielmaier, managing director of Ford Motor India was the Chief Guest, of honour at the event.

In another act of volunteerism, Ford employees engaged with close to 500 students in Panchayat Union High Schools close to Ford’s Chennai plant creating low cost science models. The models were aimed at educating children on science applications in modern life. Some of the models were buoyancy force used in submarines, magnetic levitation (bullet trains), water compressor, simple motor mechanics, light refractions, optical illusion, paper fan & magnetic force.

In another project Ford employees organized a ‘Literacy Mela on using an Endeavour equipped with 150 books, 5 laptops and Wi-Fi connection. The Mobile Library is used for literacy and online learning activities. It also has a TV that allows children to watch training and educational videos. During the Mela, Ford volunteers also performed Villu Pattu (Street Style Theatre) promoting the importance of education in rural areas.

Global Caring Month is the annual signature event of the Ford Volunteer Corps. Since its launch in 2005, Ford Volunteer Corps members have contributed more than one million hours of community service in 48 countries, representing $29 million of in-kind community investments.
