SRM Medical College Hospital – National Cancer Awareness Day (2/ 11/2017)

The Dept of Pathology, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Kattankulathur, SRM University conducted a two day education and awareness program on November 1, 2, 2017 in commemoration of National Cancer Awareness Day. This included a scientific (CME) program “Updates in Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment” held on November 2, 2017 and various competitions related to promote Cancer Awareness were held on November 1 with active participation by more than 450 medical and paramedical students.

The event was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Dr. T. Paarivendhar, Founder Chancellor, SRM University who emphasized the increasing burden of cancer on society and its implications on the individuals and families. He highlighted the increasing role and service of SRM Medical College Hospital and other SRM hospitals in delivering high quality cancer treatment through the team of dedicated and experienced doctors, state-of-the art infrastructure and facilities. He also added that sooner there will be “Department of Oncology” in Medicine and Health Sciences Program of SRM University.

The Guest of Honour Dr. N. Chandraprabha, Director of Medical and Health Sciences enumerated the prevalence of the various cancers especially seen in India and the increasing number of cancer patients treated in SRM Medical College Hospital. She emphasized the fact “Prevention is better than cure” and the importance of early diagnosis to have the best treatment outcome for the patients.

Dr. A. Sundaram, Dean, SRM MCH & RC delivered the presidential address and enumerated the facilities available at the hospital for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Dr. G. Shivashekar, Organizing Secretary and Head of the Department, Pathology welcomed the gathering.

The invited guest speakers were Dr. Venkatraman Radhakrishnan (Medical Oncologist, Cancer Institute, Adyar), Dr. Chandramouleeswari (Prof & Head, Dept of Pathology, Govt. Omandur Medical College and Multispecialty hospital) and Dr. Bulabai Karpagam (Prof & HOD, Dept of Radiology, SRM MCH & RC) shared their knowledge and expertise in the recent advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. T. Paarivendhar, Founder Chancellor, SRM University also distributed awards to the winners of various competitions conducted by the Department of Pathology and winners of the Sri. Ramamirutham Rolling Trophy with a cash reward of Rs. 18,000 for academic excellence in Pathology.
