As the field of Medical Sciences is crossing new boundaries and galloping towards new frontiers, Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) and Head and Neck Surgery as a subject is advancing at a rapid pace. The modern day ENT specialist and the medical student will be found wanting to compete if he/she does not keep themselves updated about the new developments. The spectrum of surgical procedures have widened with the advent of endoscopes and microscopes in the field of ENT. Learning by listening to Luminaries and their experiences in their respective field will inspire the students to achieve more in their life. SRM Chancellor Dr T.R. Paarivendhar Orations have tried to invoke the same and have been a regular event at SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Potheri. The first Oration was delivered by renowned ENT Surgeon, Prof. Dr K.K.Ramalingam on “Sleep Apnoea” and the subsequent Oration was done by Padmashree Prof. Dr. Mohan Kameswaran on the topic “Dare to dream- Towards Deafness free Tamilnadu”. Dr Mohan Kameswaran on this occasion became an Honorary Professor of this institution and performed the first cochlear implant on a deaf child benefited from donation of Rs 7.10 lakhs by SRM trust.
Under the inspirational leadership and guidance from our Honourable Founder Chancellor, Dr T.R. Paarivendhar, the Department of ENT organized another oration to delve on a contemporary topic on Endoscopic Surgery. Dr P. Thulasidas, eminent ENT surgeon from Chennai spoke on “Trials, Tribulations and Triumphs of an Endoscopic Surgeon”. He stressed the importance of Endoscopes and how ENT is combining with other specialties like Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Maxillofacial surgery to give the best surgical results to the patient.
Dr T.R. Paarivendhar delivered the inaugural address where he called upon the Medical Fraternity to indulge in more Research work to further the cause of medicine. Vice Chancellor of SRM University Dr Prabir K. Bagchi delivered the Presidential address and Pro Vice Chancellor (Medical) Dr P Thangaraju welcomed the gathering. Dr A Karunagaran, Head of Department, ENT introduced the speaker. The Department of ENT at SRM Medical College organizes frequent CME’s for enriching and updating existing knowledge of students. It is also one of the largest and busiest departments in the hospital and performs Microscopic, Endoscopic and Head and Neck Operative procedures with emphasis on achieving highest clientele satisfaction. In a year, ENT Department caters to around 35,000 OPD Patients, performs around 1200 major ENT and Head and Neck surgeries and around 3000 minor procedures.
