M.V Hospital for Diabetes presents the 33rd edition of Prof. M. Viswanathan Gold Medal Oration Award


Chennai  October, 2018 – M.V, Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuram and Prof. M. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre, a WHO collaborating centre for research, education and training in diabetes organised the33rdedition of Prof. M. Viswanathan Gold Medal Oration Award 2018 at Chennai, today in the august presence of more than 200 doctors and distinguished personalities.

World’s eminent oncologist Dr. V Shantha,Chairman, Cancer Institute, (WIA), Adyar, Chennai received the prestigious 33rd edition of Prof. M. Viswanathan Gold Medal Oration Award 2018. The award comprised a gold medal and a citation was presented by Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, Head & Chief Diabetologist, M.V. Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuram

The award conferred every year on a distinguished scholar from the field of healthcare.

On the occasion, Dr V Shanthalaunched the ‘Specialised women wellness clinic’ in M V Hospital for Diabetes and released data on‘Diabetes among women in India’.

Later Dr.V Shantha delivered the oration lecture on the topic, “Cancer in Women and Diabetes”. Dr V Shantha said, “The prevalence of diabetes has been rapidly growing worldwide and has become a major public health concern. Many previous studies have linked diabetes with cancer risk. Research reveal that diabetic women have high risk for most cancers than men with diabetes. Women should come forward for living a healthy lifestyle to control diabetes. I emphasis women with diabetes to undergo any available cancer-screening checkups to detect cancer earlier.”

In his address, Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, Head & Chief Diabetologist, M.V. Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuramsaid that, it is alarming to note that there has been a steady increase of diabetes among women. He described that women with diabetes have more chances of developing heart attack and kidney failure than men. He also highlighted that women with diabetes find it more difficult in controlling their diabetes than men according to a study done at the Prof M Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre.

During the inauguration of“Specialised women wellness clinic”in M V Hospital for Diabetes, Dr. Vijay Viswanathan mentioned that the new facility would screen women with diabetes for early cancer detection like breast cancer and cervical cancer. The Clinic is also well equipped to screen for other problems like thyroid disease, silent heart disease and educate women with diabetes regarding vaccination and good control of diabetes and hypertension.

This facility which is probably new in a diabetes centre which will help to prevent cancer, heart attacks and kidney failure among women in diabetes.

Dr S N Narsingan Dean and Dr Jayshree Gopal, Associate Dean also spoke on the occasion.

Prof M Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre at Royapuram has been organising various programmes for diabetes prevention and management including Diabetes Awareness and screening programmes, Diabetes training programme for TB Healthcare professionals and other programmes. It has been continuously doing research studies on the socio-economic impact of diabetes and its complications and contributing the data to the policy makers. It has been conducting various research collaborations nationally and internationally in the field of Diabetology.
