Kavithalayaa Productions, founded by the legendary filmmaker and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee K. Balachander, announced recently (14th Aug) the launch of “Harmony- with AR Rahman”, its first non-fiction digital series to be streamed globally and exclusively on Amazon Prime Video beginning August 15, 2018.
A musical treat as much as a visual delight, ‘Harmony- with AR Rahman’ is a curated exploration of the past and future of Indian music transcending all barriers. Epitomizing the idea that “Sounds are many but Music is one”, this digital series will be a true celebration of music with our Maestro bringing about the mind, body and soul in harmony with themselves and with Mother Nature.
The five-part digital series commencing from August 15, 2018 will see A.R Rahman travel across the country in real-time to meet the musicians in their very own dwellings and experience their traditional art forms. As the series unfolds the lives of the musicians, their day-today practices, performances and teaching of their craft to students, their stories of struggle and the challenges that come along, the audience will get to understand what it means to keep such a rich musical heritage and tradition alive in the 21st century.
Having successfully mastered the art of storytelling for the big and small screen over three decades, Speaking about Kavithalayaa’s foray into digital media Mrs. Pushpa Kandaswamy, Managing Director, Kavithalayaa Productions, said, ‘In an endeavour to keep pace with the current trends witnessed in entertainment consumption patterns, both globally and in India, we at Kavithalayaa decided to make an entry into the digital world by realigning our brand and content strategy to suit the new age audience. Beginning last year (2017) we made a strategic shift to focus on the production of digital content for leading over the top (OTT) platforms, including the new design for our own logo, video motif and website”.
Sharing on Kavithalayaa’s association and his own personal experience with AR Rahman during the making of ‘Harmony-with AR Rahman’ Mr. Kandaswamy Bharathan, Joint Managing Director, Kavithalayaa Productions prided that, “The video motif has been set to tune by none other than our pride, our maestro, A.R. Rahman himself. Producing Harmony with him taught us among many things, that music is the language of the soul and there are no differences whatsoever and music transcends all barriers. We are extremely elated about our association with this Oscar winning composer, who has made his debut as a host in this nonfiction digital series.”
Excited for being a part of an initiative to showcase the Indian traditions on a global stage like Amazon Prime Video, AR Rahman said “I appreciate Kavithalayaa for venturing into the digital age and for carrying on the great legacy left behind by the icon, KB sir whom I greatly respect”.
The Maestro’s journey:
The first four parts will cover Rahman’s journey to Kerala, Maharashtra, Manipur and Sikkim. In Kerala he visits Kalamandalam and learns about the tradition of Mizhavu from Sajith Vijayan. In Maharashtra, he explores the Rudra Veena, a musical tradition of the Draupad style with Bahauddin Dagar as its exponent. In Manipur he meets up with Lourembam Bedabati Devi who shares the vocal tradition of Khuilang Eshei while in Sikkim, he discovers the Lepcha community and learns about the bamboo flute, Pangthong Palith from the musician Mickma Tshering Lepcha. In all these places, Rahman jams with the musicians against the backdrop of spectacular locations.
“Mann Mauj Mein” a first of its kind ensemble:
In the 5th and concluding part, the four musicians along with the maestro come together for a grand performance at A.R.Rahman’s very own YM Studios in Chennai. The show piece track “Mann Mauj Mein” is a first of its kind ensemble arrangement and a musical narration, 21 minutes in duration capturing all the sounds unearthed along with the traditional instruments, bringing out the wonderful experience of Harmony in a contemporary perspective, that are music for the ears and visual treat for the eyes.
