Chennai to host the ‘Societe Generale Junior National Rugby Sevens Championship 2017’
Chennai, June, 2017: The Indian Rugby Football Union (IRFU) aka Rugby India in association with Societe Generale, the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and the Tamil Nadu Rugby Football Union (TNRFU), are hosting the “Societe Generale Junior National Rugby Sevens Championship 2017” at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on 10th & 11th June, 2017.
A total of 21 States teams from both the categories (Under-18 Boys and Girls) will vie for Gold at the Societe Generale Junior National Championship. The participants state are, Maharashtra, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Goa, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and the host Tamil Nadu.
The tournament will serve as a platform for selection for the Indian Under-17 and Under-18 teams that will participate at various international tournaments later this year. The Indian National Under-18 Girls team will be participating in the World Games – Rugby Sevens in Paris, France on 8th & 9th July 2017 and the Indian National Under-17 Boys and Girls teams will participate at the Youth Olympic Games Qualifiers on 9th & 10th September, 2017 in Chinese Taipei and 29th & 30th November, 2017 in Dubai, UAE respectively.

Henceforth we will largely focus on increasing national age grade tournaments and participation in international age grade Rugby tournaments, which will ultimately help us popularize the sport and build a strong national team to compete at a global level. With SDAT’s support, we have managed to put Tamil Nadu on World Rugby’s Map by successfully hosting two International events in Chennai – the Asian Pre-Qualifier (Men & Women) for the 2016 Rio Olympics in March 2015 and the Asia Rugby Sevens Series (Men & Women) in February 2016. TNRFU has been at the forefront of development activities at the grassroot level across Tamil Nadu and has performed extremely well at national age grade tournaments, bringing a number of laurels for the State. We are honored to host the ‘Societe Generale Junior National Rugby Sevens Championship 2017’ in Chennai. “Currently over 15 Districts are actively playing Rugby in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Cuddalore, Tiruvannamalai, Karur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, The Nilgiris, Madurai, Dindigul, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar and Theni. This year TNRFU to target over 100 schools to run the Get Into Rugby Programme across the state” further he added.
