Chennai, January , 2019: AP Govt. recognises Godfrey Phillips Model Village Edugundlapadu. In a strong recognition to its sustainable intervention with enduring impact on livelihoods, Edugundlapadu, a Model Village developed by Godfrey Phillips India (GPI) was officially recognized by the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Collector and District Magistrate Dr V Vinay Chand, Prakasam on the Republic Day. The Village has been developed under the Community Development program of GPI. The company works in two main districts, Prakasam and Guntur, Andhra Pradesh and reaches out to over 2 lac beneficiaries and 65 plus villages.
Dr Chand lauded the contributions of GPI in creating an enabling environment through its interventions in the areas of women empowerment, child education, access to safe drinking water, sanitation and community health.
“This recognition is heartening and it reaffirms our belief of ensuring growth and progress for the communities we work with. Our commitment to the all-round welfare of the communities and their holistic growth has translated into the village acquiring status of a model village in terms of sustainable development goals,” said Harmanjit Singh, Vice President & Head of Corporate Affairs, Godfrey Phillips India.
Edugunglapadu is a model village that is open defecation free with 100% toilets built, is open garbage free, and has access to safe drinking water. “We have constructed permanent drains to remove all stagnant sewage water, conducted tree plantation for greenery & beautification, and conduct regular health camps for healthy community. The primary schools have been fully overhauled, restored and painted with separate toilets for girls & boys. There is adequate provision of playground and all study material to ensure retention of children in school and eliminate child labour,” added Singh.
This program, under the Women Tobacco Graders Community Program is run through local partner NGO ASSIST, and has impacted over 10,000 direct and indirect beneficiaries in 4 villages.
