1st Time in South India, Male Child affected by Congenital Scoliosis treated with Magnetically Controlled growth Rod to avoid Multiple Spine Surgeries at Gleneagles Global Health City

Chennai: Doctors at Global Spine Institute of Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai, has successfully treated 9 year old boy with Magnetic Controlled growth Rod procedure to avoid multiple spine surgeries who had born with deformity in the both hip joints and spine with early onset of Scoliosis. The Team led by, Prof Dr S Karunakaran, Director, Global Spine Institute at Gleneagles Global Health city  examined the child and found that he had 68 degree  thoracic scoliosis curve with broken implants in the spine. In this novel technique, instead of doing multiple surgeries for lengthening, we can do lengthening by magnetic controlled motor and distract the rod to accommodate the child’s spinal growth in outpatient department.

Child underwent multiple surgeries for both hip joints before approaching Gleneagles Global health city. Both lower limbs are not in equal length and not stable. Child’s back was also progressively bend and having problem in breathing and patient’s parents not willing for multiple surgeries on the spine, Doctors advised the magnetically controlled growth rod as an alternative to lengthening the spine by multiple surgeries.

Dr S Karunakaran, Director, Global Spine Institute of Gleneagles Global Health City said “We have done this magnetic growth rod fixation for this boy after removing the previous broken implants. Following surgery, after two weeks he had successfully undergone the lengthening by magnetic controlled motor in the outpatient department. We will do lengthening once in every six months in outpatient clinic itself so he doesn’t require multiple surgeries for lengthening the spine”.
